World War I Timeline
1871: German states unify after defeating France in 1870; this war is the source of some of the hatred between France and Germany.
1872: The emperors of Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Russia pledge their friendship to each other in the League of the Three Emperors.
1879: Germany and Austria-Hungary create the Dual Alliance.1892France and Russia create the Franco-Russian Alliance Military Convention.
1908: Austria-Hungary annexes (takes rule of) the provinces of Bosnia and Herzegovina, angering Serbia, which wanted to dominate the Balkan region.
1912: Dutch pilot Anthony Fokker establishes his airplane building company, Fokker Aeroplanbau, in Germany and gets his first contract to build planes for the German army in 1913.
1914:
June 28- Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand is assassinated by Serbian nationalist Gavrilo Princip in Sarajevo.
July 23- Austria-Hungary issues an ultimatum to Serbia to arrest and punish any Serbian official involved in the assassination; Serbia refuses to comply with its terms.
July 28- Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia.
July 29–August 1 Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany and Czar Nicholas II of Russia exchange a series of telegrams, known as the "Willy-Nicky Telegrams," in a last-ditch effort to avoid war between their two nations.
August 1- Germany declares war on Russia.
August 2- Germany makes a formal request to enter Belgium, a neutral country, known as the German Request for Free Passage through Belgium.
August 3- Belgium refuses Germany's request for free passage by pointing out that Germany is about to take actions that are morally wrong and illegal.
August 3- Germany declares war on France; German troops enter Belgium.
August 4- Great Britain declares war on Germany; Germany declares war on Belgium; United States declares its neutrality.
August 6- Austria-Hungary declares war on Russia; Serbia declares war on Germany.
